A japa mala counter for Android

Japa on a real mala.

Count on a photographed mala, eyes open or closed. Keep a sankalpa one day at a time. Free, with no ads, offered as seva.

Coming to Google Play.

१The mala

Not a dial. Not a ring of points.

A real rudraksha mala, rendered bead by bead.

It moves under your thumb. Tap anywhere, or press volume up.

Step back, and the whole mala is in your hands.

The sumeru travels round. At one hundred and eight, a bell.

२Why the name

सांख्य, one of the oldest of India's darshanas, takes its name from counting: knowing a thing by numbering what it is made of. Sankhya the app keeps only one count, the one you offer.

सम् together, and ख्या to reckon.

३Six malas

Six malas, each as it is.

Every bead rendered from life: the furrows of rudraksha, the grain of tulsi, light through sphatik. The mala your mantra's tradition pairs with is suggested.

४Eyes closed, still counting

Japa is done inward.

The screen goes dark and keeps counting.

You feel each bead, and a longer pulse when the mala is complete.

A diya or a stick of incense keeps the dark company.

५Sankalpa

Days kept, never a broken streak.

Eleven malas a day for forty days, or a mala every day, or 1,25,000 japa by a date. A missed day is only a missed day; every day you kept still counts.

Day 1 0 kept

Forty rudraksha beads laid in five rows, a red and yellow mauli tied around them

Sankalpa fulfilled. The mauli is tied.

६Inside the app

A look inside.

Real screens from the app, in English, हिन्दी or संस्कृतम्.

Your practice

७Offered as seva

Free, with no ads and no accounts. Everything you count stays on your phone. The only things Sankhya downloads are malas and the list of mantras, from a public repository anyone can read.

How it works

Five short steps to a sankalpa. After that, everything is a tap away.

  1. Choose your mantra

From the library, by deity, or by searching for any word of it. Or write your own, in any script.

  2. Choose your mala

Rudraksha and tulsi are already on the phone. The others download in seconds.

  3. Make your promise

Eleven malas a day for forty days, a mala every day, or 1,25,000 japa by a date. In malas or in japa.

  4. Set a reminder

Once a day, and only on days you haven't begun.

  5. Hold to take it

Keep your finger down until the bar fills. A sankalpa is never taken by accident.

Counting

Tap anywhere, or press volume up. Undo with the button or a held volume down. At 108, a bell and a longer pulse. Stop halfway and Sankhya continues from that bead.

Eyes closed

A dark screen that still counts, with a diya, incense or plain darkness. Your mantra and the count stay faintly visible.

Your practice

Totals, a calendar for each sankalpa, and an export to a spreadsheet whenever you like.

Settings

The sound of each bead, vibration, which volume keys count, light that follows the time of day, and English, हिन्दी or संस्कृतम्.

The mantra library

69 mantras, each in Devanagari, in Roman letters, and with its meaning. The same list the app uses; it grows without an app update.

Questions

Is Sankhya free?

Yes. Sankhya is free, with no ads, no subscriptions and nothing to unlock. It is offered as seva.

Does Sankhya need the internet?

No. Counting, sankalpas, reminders and the mantra library all work offline. When the phone is online, Sankhya quietly checks for new mantras, and it downloads a mala only when you ask for one.

Can I count with the screen off?

Yes. Press volume up to count and hold volume down to undo, with the screen off and the phone in your lap. A gentle vibration marks each bead and a longer one marks the end of the mala. If your phone stops apps in the background, turn on Keep counting with screen off in Settings.

I missed a day. Is my sankalpa broken?

No. Sankhya counts the days you kept and shows a missed day gently, never as a broken streak. If you turned on carry forward, the shortfall is added to the next day.

Where is my practice kept?

Only on your phone. There is no account and nothing is uploaded. To move to a new phone, export your practice as a spreadsheet from Your practice and keep the file.

Which malas can I use?

Rudraksha and tulsi come with the app. Sphatik, sandalwood, red sandalwood and lotus seed are a small download each. The mala your mantra's tradition pairs with is suggested.

My mantra isn't in the library.

Write your own in the first step of a sankalpa, in Devanagari or any script. You can also suggest it for everyone's library; new mantras reach every phone without an app update.

I don't hear the beads.

Sounds follow your phone's media volume. If it is at zero, the counting screen shows Media volume is off; tap Turn up. Also check that Sound on each bead isn't set to Silent.

Support the seva

Sankhya is free, and always will be: no ads, no subscriptions, nothing to unlock. It is made by one developer, with care, for anyone who chants.

If it has helped your practice, a small offering pays for new malas to be rendered, more mantras to be checked, and the time to keep the app well. Sharing it with your satsang helps just as much.

The tip jar opens soon. Until then, sharing Sankhya is the best gift.

One bead, then the next.
